Show Visibility in Meters

An optional display preference that converts visibility labels to meters. Off by default. Ceiling stays feet. Scoring and stored personal minimums stay statute miles.

Where to turn it on

Profile → Preferences → Display Units → Show visibility in meters.

The switch is off by default. Turning it on converts visibility labels only for your account.

What changes

When the preference is on, PlaneWX shows visibility using the same ICAO four-digit meter scale used in METAR reporting (round down to the reporting step). High visibility becomes 10+ km.

  • Briefing Personal Minimums visibility labels
  • Ceilings & Visibility grids
  • Terminal decoded visibility
  • Home airport Visibility
Off (default)On
3 SM4800 (meters)
1/2 SM0800
10+ SM / P6SM floor10+ km

Exact meter codes follow the ICAO visibility reporting steps (50 / 100 / 1000 m), always rounded down — the same convention as METAR.

What does not change

  • Ceiling stays feet.
  • WX Score, flight category, and stored personal minimums stay statute miles under the hood.
  • Raw METAR / TAF strings stay official (US reports still show SM tokens; ICAO reports still show four-digit meters).
  • Wind, altitude, distance, and fuel units are not converted by this preference.

This is a display preference only. Turning it on does not raise or lower your personal minimums, and it does not change how PlaneWX scores a briefing.
