Regional & National Weather Watch
How PlaneWX synthesizes the "big picture" weather outlook for smarter flight planning.
Powered by Synoptic Intelligence™
PlaneWX's proprietary AI technology for aviation weather analysis
What Is Synoptic Intelligence™?
Synoptic Intelligence is PlaneWX's AI technology that synthesizes weather data from multiple sources into actionable pilot-focused insights. Unlike raw weather products, Synoptic Intelligence:
- •Multi-WFO AFD Synthesis — Aggregates narratives from multiple NWS Weather Forecast Offices into a single regional summary
- •22 Custom Aviation Regions — Regions designed specifically for GA flight planning, not generic geographic boundaries
- •NBM Calibration — Uses National Blend of Models data to calibrate VFR probabilities
- •Plain-Language Output — Synthesizes complex meteorology into pilot-friendly decision support
Regional Weather Summary
Each of the 22 aviation regions receives an AI-synthesized weather analysis that includes:
Synopsis
Plain-language summary of the current and expected weather pattern, including frontal positions, pressure systems, and significant weather features affecting the region.
VFR Probability (Flying Outlook)
VFR probability is a quick gauge of overall weather complexity. While it speaks directly to VFR pilots, it's also useful for IFR pilots as a signal: very low VFR% often indicates active weather systems — fronts, precipitation, icing, or convection — that create challenges beyond just ceilings and visibility. Your detailed briefing covers the specifics for your flight rules.
The 7-day outlook shows today through Day 7 using real weekday names (Wed, Thu, Sat...) so you can plan when to schedule your flights. Click any good day to start a trip.
Days 1-3 are calibrated with National Blend of Models (NBM) data. Days 4-7 use extended GFS forecasts and carry lower confidence.
Key Hazards
Best Flying Window
Identifies the optimal time window for VFR flight within the forecast period, helping you pick the best departure time.

National WatchNEW
In addition to regional summaries, PlaneWX generates a continental-scale weather synopsisby synthesizing all 22 regional summaries. This National Watch provides:
Major Weather Systems
Position and movement of fronts, pressure systems, and significant weather
Pattern Type
Zonal flow, ridge dominance, trough passage, cutoff lows, etc.
Evolution Outlook
How the pattern is expected to evolve over the coming days
Primary Concern & Best Conditions Areas
Regions with the worst and best expected flying conditions
En Route Regional WatchNEW
For cross-country flights, PlaneWX automatically identifies all unique weather regions along your route using great-circle sampling. Your briefing includes:
This allows the AI briefing to synthesize "along the route" conditions, identifying transitions between weather regimes and potential hazard areas along your flight path.
PlaneWX Aviation Regions
PlaneWX defines 22 custom aviation regions across the continental US, designed for practical flight planning rather than administrative boundaries:
Update Schedule
Regional summaries are regenerated 4 times daily, synchronized with NWS AFD issuance times:
National Watch is generated after all regional summaries are complete.
Choosing Your Preferred RegionNEW
By default, PlaneWX shows the Regional Watch for the aviation region that contains your home airport. If you regularly fly in a different area — or your home airport sits near a regional boundary — you can pin a different region so the right summary always appears on your dashboard and in your morning digest.
Switch from the Dashboard
The Regional Watch card has an inline region picker — look for the compact location badge (e.g., Up. MW ↓) just below the region name. Tap it to open the picker. Your selection saves automatically; no need to visit Settings.
Smart Suggestions
The picker organizes options into three tiers so the right answer is always near the top:
- •Auto — the region PlaneWX would normally choose from your home airport (shown with the region name)
- •Nearby — geographically adjacent regions, ideal if you're near a boundary
- •All Regions — the full list of 23 aviation regions
To reset back to the auto-detected region, open the picker and select Auto from the top of the list.
Change in Profile Settings
You can also update your preferred region at any time from Profile → Preferences → Forecast Region. The same smart-suggestion picker is available there.
International Home Airports
If your home airport is outside the US, PlaneWX automatically finds the nearest US aviation region and displays it on your dashboard. This is useful for pilots who regularly cross the border or want to keep an eye on US weather without flying from a US airport. You can pin a specific region or hide the card entirely if US weather isn't relevant to you.
Hiding Regional Watch
If you'd prefer not to see the Regional Watch card — for example, you fly exclusively internationally and US regional weather isn't relevant — you can hide it. Click the small × icon next to the Regional Watch label at the top of the card.
To restore it, go to Profile → Preferences → Regional Watch and click Show again.
Setting Your Home Airport
To see your Regional Weather Summary on the home screen, set your home airport in your profile. Go to Profile → Edit → Home Airport and enter your base airport's ICAO code.
